The Beaverbrook Art Gallery
A gift to New Brunswick’s residents from Lord Beaverbrook, The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is one of Canada’s finest private galleries and predominantly features a works by Canadian and British masters with a priority on contemporary New Brunswick artists. Unique works from international artists include Turner and Boticelli and the gallery’s icon is Salvador Dali’s Santiago el Grande, which is on permanent display. The Lord Beaverbrook Art Gallery is ranked in the top ten galleries in Canada. Summer hours (June 1 - September 30): Monday-Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday-Sunday 10am-5pm. Winter hours (October 1 - May 31): Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 12pm-5pm. Admission charged.
Christ Church Cathedral
One of Fredericton’s many historic churches, Christ Church Cathedral is perhaps North America’s finest example of Gothic revival archictecture. A prominent feature in Fredericton’s skyline, the Cathedral contains the letters patent from Queen Victoria constituting Fredericton as a Cathedral City. The year 2003 marked the 150th anniversary of the Cathedral’s completion.
The Historic Garrison District
The Historic Garrison District is the City's premier heritage and festivals centre. Home to museums, galleries and craft shops, the Garrison was once the 19th century home of colonial British army. In 1883, the Garrison was one of three sites that gave birth to the Canadian army. During July and August catch Changing of the Guard Ceremonies twice a day, evening concerts three times a week, master storytellers, outdoor theatre and classic films. In September catch the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, Atlantic Canada's largest celebration of jazz and blues, and the New Brunswick Fine Craft Festival. Open May-October. King's Landing Historical Settlement
Set in the majestic St. John River Valley and winner of many national and international awards, King's Landing is one of Canada's top living history museums, gives its visitors a look into 100 years of history and transformation. Listen for creaking wagons pulled by trotting work horses, the clang of the blacksmith's anvil, the whooshing of hoop skirts and distant melodies from lively fiddlers and dancing townsfolk. Witness the bustle of farm life and learn first hand how ordinary people lived and worked in the 19th century. Great dining opportunities. Take a self-guided tour of King's Landing, visiting some of the over 70 historic buildings complete with artifacts, furniture, tools and equipment. Experience real history, well told. Kingswood Park
The massive entertainment center at Kingswood Park includes a 18 hole signature course, a nine hole executive course, practice facilities, bowling alley and indoor play area for children. The Lynx at Kingswood Park, which boasts being one of Canada's Premiere Golf Destinations, was named Canada's Best New Course by Golf Digest magazine in 2003 - a first for any golf course in New Brunswick. Find surprises among these remarkably varied 18 holes, including a stunning 30ft waterfall on Hole 14 - the course's Signature hole.
The Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick
The Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, a Provincial Historic Site, has been the seat of government since 1882. Inside the Legislative Building view portraits of New Brunswick’s Lieutenant Governors, a beautiful self-supporting spiral staircase and a complete four volume set of 435 hand-coloured copper engravings of the Birds of America by John James Audubon painted in the 1830’s, one of only 200 sets ever produced. Open daily June through mid-August 9am-7pm. Open Monday-Friday mid-August through the first Monday in June 9am-4pm.
Mactaquac Dam
The largest hydroelectric generating station in the Maritime Provinces, Mactaquac began operations in 1968. Visit this incredible generating station to learn about the powerhouse, turbines and generators as well as how migratory fish, particularly the Atlantic Salmon, are protected. Tours are available mid-May through Labour Day.
Mactaquac Provincial Park
Just 24km west of Fredericton, Mactaquac Provincial Park is comprised of over 500 hectares of wilderness and provides visitors with a multitude of activities. During the summer months test your skills at the park's 18-hole, par 72 golf course, take a dip in the river, relax on the beach, hike the nature trails or simply enjoy a lovely picnic. Throughout the winter months visitors to the park enjoy skating, sliding, snowshoing, cross-country skiing and sleigh rides. Open year-round. Admission charged.
Old Government House
Both a Provincial and National Historic Site, Old Government House (c. 1828) is the official seat of office for New Brunswick's Lieutenant-Gouvenor. Free bilingual tours available daily during June, July and August.
Science East
A hands-on science centre, visitors to Fredericton's Science East will enjoy over 100 exhibits that illustrate the basics of science in an entertaining way. Step inside a giant kaleiodscope, meet stick bugs at the insectarium and explore a dungeon museum. Open year-round, Science East is a wonderful family attraction. Admission charged.
