Abbe Museum, Bar Harbor
Celebrating Maine's Native American heritage, the Abbe Museum tells the story of Maine's first people - the Wabanaki or the "People of the Dawn". For over 12,000 years Native Americans have harvested Maine's natural resources and preserved native traditions through songs and stories and arts and crafts. The Abbe Museum serves to continue these traditions and to educate it visitors about the Wabanaki people. Collections contain over 50,000 objects representing Native American's culture and history in Maine, including stone tools, bone objects and ceramics acquired during archaelogical excavations, displays of 17th century glass trade beads and copper tools, 18th century objects including pipes, jewelry and an etched powder horn and items from the 19th century that showcase the tradition of arts and crafts for sale. Open year-round in downtown Bar Harbor.
Downeast Heritage Centre, Calais
While in Calais pay a visit the Downeast Heritage Center to learn of times long ago, the sea, the land and more. An interesting, interactive center, the Downeast Heritage Center is fun for all ages. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am-3pm Eastern. Admission charged.
George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History, Bar Harbor
This fantastic Bar Harbor museum provides visitors with the opportunity to investigate the natural history of Maine through a variety of interpretive displays and explorations. Housed in the original headquarters of Acadia National Park, the George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History is a part of the College of the Atlantic and therefore all of its exhibits have designed and produced by students. Open mid-June-Labor Day; Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. Admission charged.
Raye's Mustard Mill, Eastport
A family operation since 1903, Raye's Mustard Mill is the last American stone mill that grinds and ages mustard in a traditional manner. Tours of the mill, a working museum, are often given on weekdays between 10am-3pm as well as the occassional Saturday. The onsite Pantry Store is open year-round and features regional arts, crafts and foods, including this popular mustard.
