Acadian House Museum
A typical 1850s Acadian home, Acadian House Museum contains interpretive panels, documents, photographs and other artifacts that depict the life of Acadian settlers following the Expulsion of 1755. Limited genealogical records are also present within the museum. Open Tuesday-Sunday, July 1 - August 3 between 10am and 4:30pm.
Beaches
Along the Marine Drive, which follows the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean, discover such wonderful beaches as Lawrence, Martinque and Taylor Head - all located within provincial parks. While Lawrence Beach is known for its surf, Martinque Beach is the preferred beach among windsurfers. All three beaches are supervised and provide both changing and picnic facilities.
Canso Islands National Historic Site (Grassy Island Fort National Historic Site)
Grassy Island, one of the Canso Islands, was once a thriving community of fishermen and merchants. Today the island remains a symbol of the important role the fisheries played in international trade and commerce during the early 18th century. Visit the reception centre to view an audio-visual presentation and life-size dioramas of an era tavern, merchant's home and military officer's residence, hike the interpretive trail that connects eight designated sites or simply visit the island for a picnic overlooking the sea. Grassy Island is accessible by boat service from Canso and admission is charged. Open daily June 1-September 15, 10am-6pm.
Memory Lane Heritage Village
In Lake Charlotte, NS experience life as it was in the 1940’s in rural Nova Scotia at the Memory Lane Heritage Village. Discover thirteen restored or re-created era buildings, authentically furnished, which depict various aspects of this long ago village. One room school house, two-seater outhouses, workshops, barns, boatshops, a general store and more. Admission: $6/adult. The Memory Lane Heritage Village is open 10am-4pm.
Musquodoboit Railway Museum
Telling the story of this former Canadian National Railway Station and Nova Scotia's railways, the Musquodoboit Railway Museum features collections of photographs, maps, posters, tickets and other artifacts as well as a small library. This station's former waiting room has been, in recent years, transformed into a tourist information centre. Open June 1- September 30 daily between 9:00am and 4:30pm.
Shearwater Aviation Museum
The Shearwater Aviation Museum chronicles the history of Canadian Maritime military aviation beginning in 1918. Inside visit the art gallery, theatre and flight simulator and view numerous aircraft including an airworthy Fairey Swordfish bi-plane. Open April 1-November 30, hours vary. Donations accepted.
Sherbrooke Village
“Visit a place where time has stood still... visit Sherbrooke Village.” Sherbrooke Village, illustrating life in Nova Scotia during the industrial boom of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, is largest museum site in the province. Stroll through the village, amongst the 80 buildings on site, and visit some of the 25 buildings open to the public to learn about shipbuilding, lumbering, gold mining and more. Admission: $9/adult. Open 9:30am-5:30pm.
