Balmoral Grist Mill Museum
Off the beaten path, near Tatamagouche, discover the Balmoral Grist Mill Museum. Constructed in 1874, water from Matheson Brook tumbles over a dam, turning a waterwheel. Linked by a pulley system, the waterwheel then turns the Scottish granite millstone, grinding the wheat, oaks or buckwheat. Various demonstrations take place daily and the finished products, used in baked goods, are sold on-site. A great place for a picnic. Open June 1-October 15; Mon-Sat 9:30pm-5:30pm, Sun 1:00pm-5:30pm. Admission charged.
Hector Hertiage Quay
Found on Pictou’s beautiful waterfront is Hector Heritage Quay. Here learn of the early Scotish settlers and how they arrived in Pictou. Open Monday-Saturday from 9am-5pm; Sunday 12pm-5pm. Extended hours (9am-7pm) from July 11-August 28 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Admission charged.
Jost Vineyards
Pronounced "Yost", Jost Vineyards is located in Malagash, Nova Scotia, just east of Pictou, and like vineyards in France and Germany, lies on the 45th Parallel. The owners of this 45-acre vineyard moved from Germany in 1970 and began experimenting with wine making in Canada in 1978. Since then, Jost Vineyards has produced many award-winning products including their 1999 Vidal Icewine. In 2000 this Vidal Icewine won Canada's Wine of the Year - a first time in 20 years for wine produced outside of British Columbia or Ontario. While visiting this Malagash vineyard, learn of the processes used to produce ice wine and the many other classic European varieties, such as Riesling, made at Jost on a free winery tour, browse the wine shop or select some gourmet goodies in the deli and picnic on the grounds. On the market since 1985, today you can find Jost products featured in many restaurants throughout Nova Scotia.
Northumberland Fisheries Museum
Located in Pictou's former C.N. Rail Station, the Northumberland Fisheries Museum depicts the history and culture of the fishing industry along the Northumberland Strait. View over 2600 artifacts including thousands of photographs, old engines, boat models, live rare colored lobsters and a cannery display. Open daily between May 15 and October 15, 9am-6pm. Admission charged.
Nova Scotia Museum of Industry
Larger than seven hockey rinks, Stellarton's Nova Scotia Museum of Industry is the largest museum in Atlantic Canada. This incredible museum features over 37,000 artifacts, allowing its visitors to truly capture and comprehend the experiences of the province's industry workers. Learn how to quilt or hook a rug alongside costumed interpreters, hear tales of triumphs and tragedies and view two of Canada's oldest steam locomotives, a belt-driven working machine shop, a collection of pressed Nova Scotia glass and much more when you visit the Nova Scotia Museum of Industry. Oxford Wild Blueberry & Maple Interpretive Centre
Over 50% of the country's blueberries are harvested each year in Oxford, Nova Scotia, making it the "Blueberry Capital of Canada". To learn more about the region's wild blueberry and maple industries, visit the town's interpretive centre and see displays depicting natural history, harvesting, processing and uses of the fruit. Open April 5 - October 31, 9am-6pm.
Sutherland Steam Mill Museum
Operated by the Sutherland family until 1958, this steam mill museum demonstrates milling techniques used throughout the steam-age and showcases a variety of interesting exhibits that highlight 19th century working life. Located near Tatamagouche in Denmark, NS. Open daily June 1- October 15, Monday-Saturday 9:30am-5:30pm, Sunday 1:00pm-5:30pm. Admission charged.
