Eastport, Maine

Old Sow Whirlpool
Old Sow Whirlpool

Eastport, the easternmost city in the United States, is a deep-water commercial port on the Bay of Fundy. It is located on Moose Island in the Passamaquoddy Bay. The city overlooks the Old Sow Whirlpool, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere, which can be seen from Eastport’s Dog Island two hours before high tide.

Although great emphasis is placed on the city’s fishing, scallop harvesting and lumber shipping industries, Eastport is the leading center of the aquaculture industry on the East Coast. In addition, blueberry and cranberry harvests are quite abundant in this part of Maine.

Population: 1646

Hi, We’re from Vermont and had hoped to get into Canada in September to see the tides. But with Coronavirus we are not so sure if the border will be open then. So we thought we’d get an Air B&B as close to the border and on the bay as possible.
Are you saying is that we will not see the tides from the Maine side?

I have visited here before. We are interested in going in a month. Can you see the high tide from Maine side since the boarder isn’t open for tourists?

We would like to do a trip to bay of fundy as well as follow seafood fests along northeast coast. I’m thinking of flying from DC and then renting car. Any recommendations appreciated.

You don’t need a regular passport. You need passport card. I would also have my birth certificate if you would go into Canada. You aren’t flying in or out. I had mine done at the post office so I could go to Campobello Island.

What can I see of the tides from Eastport?

I want to go by car from bar harbor to the Canadian bay of fundy. What is my best route?

      Bay of Fundy

It depends on your definition of ‘best’. Either way, you’ll want to cross the border at the Calais/St. Stephen crossing. You can follow either the 1 or take Route 9. The 9 will get you there faster, but the 1 is a nicer drive in my opinion.

If you don’t have a passport is the bay of fundy worth seeing in maine

      Bay of Fundy

Yes, it’s a very nice area. That being said, it’s not really worth it if your main reason for going is to see the tides.

Can you visit the bay of funny from Eastport as my passport hasn’t been renewed yet?

      Bay of Fundy

Hi Art, without a valid passport you won’t be able to cross to the Canadian side of the Bay of Fundy.
